BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. Reports were read and dealt with as follows: GAS ALV.YAGER'S REPORT.

The gas manager (Air. |C. Alaelean) reported that the west side of the eoal shed was repaired during the month and the l'oofing iron was renewed over the new hod of six retorts. —'Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman (Air. A. G. Huntley) reported as follows: During the month breaks in the asphalt surface of Alain Street were repaired, levels taken for footpaths in Avenue Road, Reeve and Howe Streets, ruts patched in Avenue Road, Purcell and Duncan Streets. The fence around the culvert in Spring Street was impaired and cleaning done around (Ire plugs and indicators. Afoutoa Road and Duncan Street, were graded, rimkara gardens mowed, and the Triangle and Easton Park garden cleaned up. Brown Street cutting was inspected but there was mi sign of any material damage having been done to the properties adjoining. The drift was covered with lupin scrub to prevent any ■lurther drift. —Adopted.

WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT.

The waterworks foreman (Air. W. Neville) reported as follows: — During tlit* month most of the lime was taken up supervising re lief work in forming a footpath on the north side of Thvnne St., and in Avenue Road from Putter Street to the Cemetery. One of Putter Street cuttings was also widened and work carried out in the Town Hal). At the pumping station 1,975,1)00 gallons of water was pumped.—Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE "as read and dealt with as follows: — Prom Aliss L. Ooppiestono, asking for permission to teach swimming in the local hatlis during the season. —Granted. Prom the Alain Highways Board, enclosing a copy of the annual report. for the year ending March. 31 si, 1930. —Received. TO RELIEVE UNEAIIPLOYAIEXT. A letter was read from the Elthnin Borough Council, submitting a proposal propounded by the Mayor (Mr. Bridger) to relieve unemployment by developing the unoccupied lands of the Dominion.

The communication which was read by the Clerk, fully explained Ihe scheme. A i the conclusion the Alavor said it was the duty of

every citizen to give serious consideration to solving the unemployment position. The scheme as outlined by the Mayor of Eltham -was a good one and should receive sup 1 -ort.

Or. Thompson said the proposal was similar to the old Ballanee Settlement scheme which had operated ((ilito successfully. The only difference was that the proposal was to open up the poor pumice binds and in his opinion it was a difficult thing to keep people on poor land.

it. was decided that- dog registiations for the year 1931 will be as follows: —All bona fide sheep and cattle dogs 2/(5; for all others 10/-, the fees to be paid before the 31st January, 1931. DANGEROUS PARKING.

Cowley drew the Council’s attention to the, fact- that members of the local Tenuis Club were again parking their ears in Johnston Bireel near the Avenue Hoad intersection which was dangerous to traffic. C'r. Boss considered the eorner was too dangerous to allow ears to be parked in the locality.

The Mayor said that some time ago the Club had been requested v.ot to allow ears to be parked in Johnston Street and for a time members had abided by the .Council’s wishes. The cause of the (rouble was that members backed their ears to be in the shade of the lives. He did not. thinik. there would be much danger if they parked further down the road. It was decided to refer the matter to the Traffic Inspector. VICTORIA PARK TREES. Cr. Barron suggested that now (he belt of trees at the eastern end of Victoria Park had been felled that the one or two unsightly ones left in the middle of the reserve be cut down. ITe suggested that they should be offered to the ion tractor. The Mayor said that other residents had expressed a desire lor Ihe trees.

It was decided to remove the I rees. THE CAMPING SITE. Cr. Cowley recommended that Ihe camping site on Victoria Park be cleaned up before the holiday season. The Mayor stated that the matter had already received the attention of the road foreman. FFSTIVE GREETING'S. At the conclusion of business the Mayor extended festive greeting's to the Councillors as the meeting would,'be the last this year. They had experienced many ups and downs this year, he said, but they all hoped for better times. He trusted that the new year would ‘usher in more prosperous times for Councillors and the people of Foxton generally. Councillors heartily reciprocated the Mayor’s greetings.
