SUBSIDISING THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
MiIk’BINKLATER BUSY BUT HOPEFUL.
Mr. .J. Linklater, M.P., struck an optimistic note with regard to subsidising the hemp industry during the course of his speech at the opening of the flower show yesterday. He deplored the serious state of affairs obtaining locally and said he was using his best endeavours to assist in any way possible and would continue to do so. There was a silver lining bo the blackest cloud, however, and allhough tilings loojked black they should all look for better times ah.ead and he felt sure that they 'would not he far off. The sun was hidden just now but there was no doubt that it would shine brighter than before in New Zealand before long. He had been pleased tha t negotiations had. been instituted between the men and the millers, but although there had not been any very satisfactory result as yet he hoped that there would he in the near future. ‘The Unemployment Board had now been set up and would meet at an early date. He had been keeping in close touch with the Minister of Labour on the matter of subsidising the Ilax industry in an endeavour to get- the local mills going again and urged him to make the closest investigations into the position. The Minister had assured ■Mr. Linklater that the flax indusIrv would he the first to be inquird into by the Board and he hoped that at no distant date the wheels of industry would again be in motion in Foxton and that more prosperous times would prevail. (Applause) .
