RAILWAY FARES AND FREIGHTS INCREASED.
£202,267 MORE 'REVENUE ANTICIPATED. 1 On the basis of the Royal Commission’s report widespread increases in passenger fares and freight rates announced by the Minister of Railways in a special Gazette on Tuesday alre estimated to produce additional annual revenue totalling £202,267. Increases in fares will realise approximately £117,967 and in freights £84,300. The new tariff operates from Sunday, November 16. All alterations made follow closely the recommendations of the commission although in several instances no action has been taken upon the lines suggested by that body. One 'recommendation of the commission whereby it was hoped to increase revenue by £B,000 iby revising school season tickets has not been followed, and in four instances the Minister has not •adopted the proposals of the commission whereby it was estimated revenue from freight rates would be increased by a total of .6185,000. The commission estimated that, were its proposals for increased charges put into effect, the increased revenue would have amounted to £334,000. It is understood, however, that the Minister intends to investigate the possibility of further revising rates and there is a chance that other adjustments will be made. " The commission also estimated that by the prosecution of its proposals expenditure could be curtailed by £294,000, but so far nothing has been done by the Government to give effect to this part of the report. EXAMPLES OP NEW RATES. The following gives a few examples of how the new rates will operate, as. compared with the old on journeys from Wellington:—
The charge for “de-luxe” sleepers will now be 25/-, instead of £l, and in the case of other‘sleeping cars the charge will be increased from 12/6 to 15/-. • To travel to Audkland, first class, with de luxe sleeper, will now cost £4 13/1, whereas formerly the charge was £4' 5/4.
