FIRE AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
DEFENCE OEFIIC'E DESTROYED. Palmerston North, Nov. 5. An old landmark at Palmerston North, the large two-storey defence office in Main .Street,, opposite* tin* Manawatu Hosiery Mills, was destroyed by lire shortly before 11 o'clock to-night. Though the brigade was promptly on the scene, the lire had: secured a good hold before it arrived, flames shooting through the roof, while dense clouds of smoke were issuing from the blazing building. The building was a very old one, and dry timber, combined with a light south-west wind, made the task of the brigade difficult. Working against great odds, four leads of hose were played on the lire, but the brigade was unable to quell the outbreak before the 'building wns almost completely destroyed. 'Nothing was saved. No insurances were available to-night.
