BAINESSE CROSSING FATALITY.

* DECEASED’S FAILED TO TAKE ' PRECAUTIONS.

At the inquest held at Palmerston North yesterday, concerning (he death of Samuel Bamberry, lorry driver, who was killed at a % lailway crossing near Bainesse last Thursday, Mrs. Leach, who witnessed the accident, stated that the loirrv driver did not seem to be aware that the train was so close when lie droiye over the crossing. She knew that the deceased was blind in the left eye. The driver of the engine, T. Yardley, stated that the driver of the lorry gave no indication .that he was about to cross the line. As soon as witness saw the lorry making for the crossing he applied the brake and brought the train to a stop within 300 yards. The fcbrouer returned a verdict that the deceased met his death in a collision between the motor-lorry lie was driving and a train. He added that the accident could only be attributed to the failure of deceased to take the proper precautions wiien approaching a crossing. Crossing problems were difficult ones, stated the iCojroner, the human element being the deeidim* factor between safety and danger The latest accident went to show 7 (hat extreme care should be taken by anyone approaching crossings.
