FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

AIONTITLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of 'Commerce was held in Ross’s rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr. J. K. Hornblow (president). Also present were Messrs D. Christie, G. F. Smith, R. N. Spoil's, A. Alsop, E. 11. Murray, D. E, Barron, M. E. Pevreau, J. A. Aitchison and the secretary (Mr. R. 0. Hornblow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs F. C. Raikes, C. M. Ilewett and W. Trueman. MOTION OF SYMPATHY.

.Tt was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr .1. M. Thomson in his illness and to wish him a speedy recovery to health.

It was also decided to write to Mr. F. C. Raitecs (Orona Downs) expressing the Chamber’s pleasure at his recovery from his recent illness and expressing hope that he would soon he able to once more attend IChamber meetings. THE BANK CHARGE.

The Acting Prime Minister (Hon. E. A. Ransom) acknowledged receipt of the Chamber’s protest against the increase in bank charges for keeping accounts and stated that while it was considered that the Banks might well have refrained from imposing additional charges upon the commercial community during the present period of economic depression, the matter was entirely, one as between the banks and their customers and accordingly the Government could not directly interfere. The communication was received.

TO AiS'SHST BOROUGH FINANCES.

Mr. F. H. Murray suggested that in older to assist the Borough finances the Council consider the advisability of increasing itinerant hawkers fees. Tile by-laws were consulted and ic was disclosed that the fee for such traders was £1 per annum, 10/- fur any one quarter or portion thereof or 5/- per single week. It was pointed out that in-other boroughs and counties the fee was in the vicinity of £5 5/-.

Ah*. Murray said that there, were quite a number of hawkers about now and if the fee was increased I lie,borough would derive a considerable .amount of revenue from this source.

•It was decided to suggest to the Council I hat it. increase the fee and have the by-laws amended accordingly. , CATTLE SHIPPING PENS. Tlie secretary reported that his attention had been drawn to the necessity for the strcngthciiiug of the cattle 'Shippingpens on the local wharf. Complaints had been rereived by those using them that they were not safe and at very little expense they could he repaired. Some years ago a pen of cattle had broken through the rails owing to the rottenness of some of the posts and got into the river and it was only. with some difficulty (hut they had been rounded up again. They did not want a recurrence of this and as there were a large number of cattle being shiplied through Foxton annually he thought that: it would be in the interests of the port to have the matter attended to. It was decided to’refer the matter to the local stationmaster and Harbour Board. BEACH IMPROVEMENTS.

Af;r. U. F. Smith .described to the Chamber the steps taken by a beach improvement committee at Kangiora to popularise that seaside resort which he thought might lie applicable to Foxton.

It was decided to elect Mr. Smith sis the Chamber’s representative on tlie Beach Improvement Committee and lie promised to take the matter up with that body.
