MARITANA.

SUCCESSFUL PE RFORAMNCE BY LEVIN CHORAL SOCIETY.

The Levin Choral Society werp greeted with a good and appreciative audience in the Town Hall last night when they produced the opera “Maritana.” Tt is somewhat an ambitious undertaking Tor any comparative small community to attempt opera foi* (lie reason that vocalists of sufficient talent and histrionic ability to sustain the leading roles arc few and far between. In fad even in large centres the professional flanks have to be drawn upon to fill the bill. "Well-balanced clients work can be obtained under capable eonduel orship. For this reason musical comedy finds appeal both with societies and public. However, the Levin Society decided to enter the realm of opera and are to be congratulated upon their efforts last night. It was impos-. sible for financial reasons to provide. the elaborate settings in the various acts which create the atmosphere to the opera. The story of the opera lias already been described. As “Maritana,” Miss P. Meyers sustained her difficult role in a manner which won her high encomiums. She possesses both a pleasing voice and personality. Mr. Dennis as “Don Ceasar de Borzan,” sustained this role above the amateur standard and his solo work was of a high standard. Miss Lemmon ns “Lazarillo” was pnrtienlaji’ly successful in her rendering of “Alas those Chimes.” Mr. Hodder as “Don Jose" gave a very natural interpretation as did Air. Tom Yineenl in the role of the “King.” All the other roles were well sustained. The chorus work was particularly well balanced. The dressing was elaborate and charming. On the whole the production was well up To the best

amaleur standard and fliere were no awkward pauses. Special praise is due to Ibe conductor, Mr. Jenkins. The orchestra accompaniments were particularly good.

Half the proceeds of the entertainment were given lo the High School funds and in Ibis connection we are asked to publicly convey the thanks of the school to the Society.
