THEFT OF TREES
PROM THE RACECOURSE,
On making an inspection of the Foxton Racecourse property recently Mr. J. Simpson (caretaker) discovered that several pinus insignis trees in a plantation ou the south side of the course had (men cut down and removed. . The trees in each instance were on the small side and had been remojved intact there being no signs of limbs left about fc It was also discovered that some of the limbs of the larger trees had been lopped off and taken a way. In all about a dozen trees had been cut down and} removed. A watch was maintained but the offenders so far have not been detected. The work is earried out at night time. The matter is now in the hands of the police. Another case of wilful damage is also reported from WJiirofcino where solid totara fence posts have been sawn off flush with the ground, the staples removed and the posts taken away, presumably for firewood. It is hard to account for this, however, as there is plenty of firewood available for ihe cutting in and around Foxtou as a result of the milling of the timber in the various plantations.
