FOXTON TENNIS CLUB.
ANNUAL REPORT. The report of: the president of the Foxton Tennis Club (Mr. L. 0. Bryant) which will be presented at to-morrow evening’s annual meeting, reads as follows: “1 have much pleasure in presenting this, the annual report for the 1929-30 seaso*. “Although if cannot be said that ihe iClnb had made any decided advance, either in membership or financially during last season, still has held its own, which in these times of depression is quite satisfactory. “Finance. —.Members will sec by a perusal of the balance-sheet that a small credit balance of £1 5/5 is shown on the year’s working. The mortgage i.s now £BO, having been reduced hv £2O last season. This mortgage costs us £2O 9/0 yearly which together with the rates (this year £l7 5/11), makes a total of £43 15/5 which is a very heavy drain on our revenue. Members will nolo that there are still some subs, onlstanding. There is no doubt tlial some means of getting subs, in more promptly will have lo he devised.
“Membership.— Many changes have taken place during the season. Of the members of your committee the following 'have left the district: —Mr. and Mrs. Docl, Miss Stevenson, and Messrs MeCorkindale and Roach. Mr. and Mrs. Docl and Miss Stevenson were officially farewclled by the Club and presented with tokens of esteem in view of tin 1 excellent work they had done on the committee. The Club is doing its part in encouraging tennis among the younger people of the town and the junior portion of the Club is in a very nourishing condition. Two of the juniors F. Cowley and A. Martin were members of the senior A team.
“Competitions.—A team was entered in the southern division of the competition organised by the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association, matches being played against Levin, Shannon and Otaki. Although not; successful in winning, still very valuable experience was gathered by the members who participated in these games. It is unfortunate that the competitions for the Rose Bowl and Men’s Cup were not organised. The junior competitions on the other hand were excellently supported and some very good games eventuated. The winners were F. Cowley and Connie Robinson, Joan Mason and A. Martin rmincrs-up. In connection with the junior tournament the Club’s grateful thanks are due to Mr. Bred. Robinson and Mrs Sherwood who so kindly donated the trophies.
“Efforts. —'During the year a social evening was held at Mrs. Stevenson's residence in aid of the Club funds and resulted in a handsome profit being shown. Thu Chilli’s thanks are due to Mr. and Mrs. Austin who so kindly placed I heir residence ai the disposal of tin l Cluli. A shop day was also held, a sum of £lO 0/8 being added lo the funds. Further effort* this year will be necessary if the Club is to function successfully. 41 Ma i n t en a n c e.— Unfortunately the courts were not top-dressed at the end of last season and consequently the hack lines are far from satisfactory. If some scheme could be devised to have, a man to cut tint courts at least once a week it would be a relief to the men members. To give the hack lines a chance to recover perhaps it would be advisable for the incoming committee to consider shifting the courts to run cast and west. The pnivilion, which was erected by the men at the commencement of the season, proved very useful.
“Bereavement. —The Club deeply regrets the loss it sustained during (he year in the death of its patron (Francis Robinson Esq.), who was always keenly interested in I lie welfare of the Club. “In conclusion, T would like to I hank the members of the Commitlee for the hearty manner in which (hey have co-operated with me, the public for their generous support, and the Press for the publicity given to club affairs.” BALANCE-SHEET.
