SURF CLUB AND HARBOUR BOARD.
A DISPUTED ACCOUNT
At the conclusion of formal business at yesterday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board, the chairman (Mr. J. Linklater, M.P.) said he understood, that there was an ae Mount in dispute between the Board and Surf Club and said he would like to see the matter settled.
The secretary (Mr. R. Rangilienea) in explaining the position said that some time ago the Board had instructed him to purchase a life saving reel and equipment for use on the beach by the Surf Club. He had consulted the secretary of the Club who had asked him to procure two reels as there are two patrols in operation at the same time pledging the Club to meet the cost of the extra equipment. The reel had been procured but he had been unable to obtain payment from the Life Saving Club which now repudiated responsibility. Mr. Perreau (president of the Club) said the Club was not responsible for the payment of the extra reel and said that the. secretary had never been authorised to pledge the Club. Two reeds were necessary and it was understood that the Board was procuring I hem. The Club had little funds to meet such an expenditure. •Mr. W. E. Barber considered the Board should mpot the cost of the equipment. The Club is doing good work, he said, and if they save one life only the expenditure by the Board will he justified. The chairman (Mr. J. Linklater) endorsed Mr Barber’s remarks and said the Club was doing a great deal to popularise the beach. They were making the beach safe to bathers and should receive ( all the assistance possible. He proposed ( hat the Board meet the cost of the extra reel.
This was agreed to and the matter dropped.
