BOOKMAKER GOES TO GAOL.

“I don’t want time lo pay. I’ll go up.” said William Benjamin Wilkinson, aged 34, who was convicted in the Police Court to-day and lined £2O for carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Default was fixed at three weeks' imprisonment with hard labour.
Detective-Sergeant Holmes said accused had been arrested at ahont 1.16 p.in. to-day. In his possession were found hooks with numerous betting entries. Thieve were records of nine bets on races then being run at Avondale. In accused’s possession was found the sum of £l4 (is sd. It appeared that accused had been betting for about six months. The records showed that I lie bets did not exceed £l. Accused had a wife and five children. ,Lle had not been previously before the Court.
“1 don’t know how in the world I’m going to pay. I’m broke,” said accused upon the line being imposed.
