UNEMPLOYMENT AND AWARDS.
In yesterday’s Dominion a correspondent, “Employee,” writes as follows: —
“It is now impossible for millers lo obtain a price which will enable them, to employ men at the Arbitration award rate. For that reason this industry might welt be helped.” The foregoing is taken from the report in your columns of a, certain member speaking on the Unemployment Bill. Have we accepted freak Socialism that such an attitude can go unchallenged 6 / Is the sanctity „of arbitration awards such that it is sacrilege to attack existing awards and call for a thorough overhaul of the Arbitration Act"? Many awards are adding to unemployment, raising cost of production, aud by requiring too small a percentage of boys Lo men, shutting- out our sons from learning a trade. 'Surely we New Zealanders are game to face the clamour from our union officials and insist on the removal _of absurd restrictions, which are not only keeping -men out of work, but leaving too many of our boys unskilled labourers.
