DAIRYING PAY-OUTS.
THE MONTH’S ADVANCES
Daily farmers generally will heartily welcome the slight, improvement that has taken place in the produce nuutkct at Home during the past few days. The advance, however, was a little too late to affect the monthly payouts of the various companies which wore fixed several days earlier than the news reached (he Dominion. Dairymen had been looking forward to an opening- seasonal price in the region of 1/-. Had the figure been lower they would not have been perturbed, but an advance of 1/2 at the local factory on top of a final bonus from last- season came as a pleasant surprise. Farmers in the Manawatu have not been so fortunate,' the majority of the factories in that -area (Awahuri, ‘Cheltenham, ICairanga, Rongotea, Palm and Wliakarong'n) deciding' un a payout of 1/- per pound. Taking- info consideration the fact that at the time this advance was fixed, the market was reported unsteady at 124/-, the factories certainly showed much optimism. Tin* London price of 124/- per ewt. for butter is the equivalent of 11.83 d f.o.h. New Zealand and in an average factory that figure will only permit of a final payment of 12.01 d per lb. fat.
While discussing the season’s prospects a few weeks back with well-known local farmers, the majority of whom are following the mafiket reports very closely, many opinions were expressed, some very pessimistic and others the extreme opposite. One dairyman was of the opinion that butter, during the present season was likely to drop to Bd, while another optimistic member of the industry is looking forward lo (he market quotations reaching 100/ - to ISO/- by the end of (he year. Such a rapid, recovery, however, is hardly likely, hut is evident that flic trend of the market conditions is much more favourable.
The dairying season for the .Dominion has opened with a butterfat increase of approximately o pei- cent, compared with last season and the indications are that with favourable weather conditions, New Zealand will notch allot her record veav.
