IN the circumstances we believe that the loan I public approves ol the Borough Council's deeision to instal “talkies." Whether the (louneil’s previous imleeision on 'this matter was wise need not now he dismissed. The point is that it the Oouneil had not made the decision the ratepayers would have been faced with a greater loss in that the two large halls would have been unproductive of revenue except for periodical let tings. To continue showing silent- pictures would have been as attractive to the public as the old lime magic lantern entertainment, .such is tin 1 evolution of the picture business. To bring this class ol public entertainment up to modern conditions will necessarily mean an initial outlay bill increased pa - tronage. despite the present and, we hope, passing depression, will help to meet to a greater extent the loss to ratepayers that would he involved by closing the Town Hall. So far as the managerial side is concerned, the Council is extremely fori untile as compared with other towns. I’he I own Clerk's generous offer is beyond .passing commendation while in Mr Reid the Council possseses an expert. operator. In such capable bands the ratepayers can be assured of the best possible service both in the preliminary negotiations and subsequent management,
