THE FOXTON BRANCH LINE
MR. EDWARD NEWMAN’S OPINION. During the course of his address at the Foxton Lunch Club meeting to-day, Mr. Edward Newman said that he had rea,d with consternation, dismay and annoyance the references to the possible closing of Ihe Foxton branch railway line which had appeared at different times in the press. He found it difficult to believe it possible that Ihe line could be closed. Foxton was only on the commencement of its development the whole future of which, in his opinion, depended on the rivter cuts. The Sandon tram liile was also Very beneficial and served a useful puipose to a great number of farmers throughout a large district. He was perfectly certain that the Foxton line was the last that the Department should consider closing. It served Palmerston North in addition to Foxton and district and Palmer-, ston North was ever growing. When closer settlement boot place in this fertile district he had no doubt that Palmerson North would develop into a city that would far out do many of those much larger to-day.
