MATTER DISCUSSED IN THE HOUSE. Strong criticism of the Post and Telegraph Department’s action in dismissing five officers at Auckland last December for what was held to be an illegal use of an official telephone was expressed by members of the House of Representatives yesterday when the men’s petitions were reported back from the M to Z Public Petitions Committee. Much interest was aroused in the eases at the time, it being alleged that a telephone in the Auckland Post Office had been used for betting purposes.

It also considered that t-lie punishment was too severe in the eases of R, Blair, .1. IT. Edwards, R. W. S. Smith and E. W. Ansi is,_ and it recommended the petitions for the Government’s favourable consideration. The findings were endorsed in each ease.
