ROYAL GIFT REPLACES LOSS. Christchurch, August 31. The house of the Mayor, the Rev. J. Iv. Archer, was last year robbed, and the thieves set fire to it. One of his prized possessions which the thieves took was a signed portrait of the Duke of York. The Mayor Ims lately received from Mr. P. Iv. Hodgson, private secretary to the Duke of York, a letter expressing- the Duke’s sympathy, and also a fresh portrait, autographed and neatly framed in leather.
