TOWN HALL. A deft and skilful combination of romance, comedy, pathos and action, told in scenes that are both thrilling" and beautiful, makes "Thoroughbreds,” the Universal production at the Town Hall on Saturday, one of the most enter- y tabling photoplays of the season, r “Thoroughbreds” is a picturisation of the “sport of 'kings.” It is filled with scenes -of the turf and the many events which lead up ~to the running of an important horse rac-e. The story does not hesitate to expose the evil phase of the sport, made up -by the gambler parasites who live off the races. Gerald Beaumont noted sport writer was ~ I lie author. Some of the most thrilling scenes of. racing horses ™ ever (limed provide much of the hileiest and also the tremendous climax. Marian Nixon, who plays her first starring role in “Thoroughbreds,” and Richard Walling, carry the love interest. Both give excellent performances and the romance sequences are exceedingly veil 'llia lulled by Ihe pair. “Thoroughbreds,” is the story of a young jockey who is induced to “throw” at; important race he is expected to win, through the influence of a beautiful adventuress: He is found out and disgraced but through unfailing efforts of his former sweetheart whom he has deserted, he is given another chance. He makes good 'by winning a big race and is restored to the favour of the racing public and his first sweetheart. Mary Nolan enacts the role of the glittering Accomplice and Otis Harlan scores in a comedy role. Others in the company,are Sam De ~ Grasse, Montagu Love, Claire Mac- ; Dowell, David Torence, Johnny Fox ffnr., and Hayden 'Stevenson. Also “Cross Country Bunion Race” ' (Comedy), British and World’s News. Colleen Moore will appear next Wednesday in a jazzy story of modern youth, “Why Be Good.” Miss % Moore is highly amusing as “Miss i 1930,” a young lady specialising iu the latest dance steps and the new- - est novelties of adornment.
