The people of New Zealand are well served by public hospitals. Statistics for 1029 reveal that there are 109 such institutions in the Dominion, or one for every 15,513 of tlie population, including Maoris. The total number of admissions during the year was 78,607. Persons treated in hospitals in the North Island numbered 58,881, and those in the South Island 29,931. Carelessness or absent-minded-ness must be far more common in New Zealand than is generally recognised, for there were no fewer than 12,018 letters and 5732 newspapers posted during last year without any addresses at all, and 23,122 letters imperfectly or insufficiently addressed, according to the annual report.
