Jull (WnipaAvn) has accepted the invitation to contest the Wuipawa by-election as the United party candidate. 'Mr. R. A. Loughnan, of Wellington, associated AA’ith journalism in the Dominion for 60 years, celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. While undergoing nn operation in the public hospital at Palmerston North yesterday, Mr. Charles Metier died under the anaesthetic. Mr. Me Her Avas a former resident of Weraron, and Avas well-known in Levin.

Mr. T. V. Grotty took over Mr. I Corn’s business yesterday. Mi*. Crottv comes from Wanganui and besides being a qualified chemist, possesses an English degree in Optics.

The death occurred at LeA*in yesterday of Mr. Tom Brown, aged 68 years. The late Mr. Brown had been a resident of Levin for 36 years. He was secretary for sc\ reral dairy companies and was accountant for the LeA*in Chronicle for 15 years. He avos a Justice of the Peace and was Coroner for the district. He Avas a long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge, and a staunch Church man, being for many years past a lav-reader of St. Mary’s. Quite a number of other local institutions, including the. Levin Horticultural Society had the benefit of his secretarial experience. In all Ins relations, Avhetber of a business or private nature, he Avas sincere arid upright, and actuated by a diesire to give his host- service. He leaves no family, hut is survived bv his Avife.
