VALEDICTORY

FAREWELL TO AIR. I. CORN. On Thursday evening members of the Fox ton Chamber of Commerce and Lunch C-lub met at Walls’ ten rooms to bid farewell to Mr. I. Corn, who is shortly leaving Foxton for Gisborne. The gathering was presided over by Air. J. K. Hornblow (president of the Chamber of Commerce) and a number of apologies were received from those unable to be present. Air. Ilornblow expressed the Chamber’s deep regret at the departure of Mr. Corn from Foxton as he bad been an enthusiastic member, and an enterprising- business mun. He had interested himself in various public matters and socially had been quite an asset to the town. He expressed the hope that he would 'find happiness and prosperity in his now sphere of life. Air. D. Christie (vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce) endorsed the President’s remarks and in asking Air. Corn to accept a suitcase from the Chamber and Lunch Club referred to his keen and active association with the Lunch Club, of which body he had been secretary since its inception. Mr. Corn was going to be missed very much from Foxton, lie said. The Afayor (Air. M. E. Perreau) regretted the loss of such a publicspirited person as Air. Corn from the-community. In him they were losing a real “live wire.” He had been most prominent in the Chamber of Commerce, Lunch Club, and flic Boy ;Scout movement and his suggestions had always proved interesting and helpful. The citizens as a whole regretted the departure •of Air. and Mrs. Corn from Foxton and all joined in wishing them success. and happiness in their new home. What was 'Foxtail's Joss was in this instance, another town’s distinctive gain.

Air. C. AT. Hcwetl referred to Air. Corn's association with the Plunked Society and Golf Club. The Plunked .Society was indebted to him for assistance in an advisory capacity and also from a (inaucial point of view. In his public and social life Mr. Corn had set a splendid example to Foxionites and he particularly regretted his departure from their midst. Rev. W. 11. Nicholas added his tribute to the public services rendered Foxton by Air. Corn. He. had given his time and services so unstintedly, lie said, .wlhipli meant so much in small communities such as Foxton. He had been associated with any movement for the uplift and success of the town and had dune his duty ns a citizen and businessman. He also desired to lake the opportunity of publicly I hanking Mr. 'Corn for the services he luid rendered the Presbyterian Church. Roth Mr. and Mrs. Corn had placed their culture and abilities at the disposal of the church whenever required for which they were very grateful and bp hoped ilial they would serve Gisborne as they had done Foxton. Others who added to the remarks of the previous speakers wen- Messrs W. Trueman, G‘. F. .Smith and W. E. Bullard.

Mr. Corn in acknowledging the presentation, said that during the four years lie had spent in Foxton he had made friendships which he would carry lo the grave. They were friendships which had done much to. help him on in life and lie deeply regretted losing contact with l hose with whom lie had been so intimately associated. He thanked the speakers for their remarks and would convey their good wishes to Mrs. Corn. He was pleased that ho had his “movie” outfit with him as when settled in Gisborne, so far away from Foxton, he would still be able to see old and familiar faces by screening his film of local scenes and celebrities.

All then joined in singing “For Tie’s a .Jolly Good Fellow” after which cheers were given for Mr. and Mrs. Corn and family and a very pleasant evening concluded with 'the singing of “Auld Lang ftvne.”
