Minister will be prepared to consider the re-opening of the lines was given to a deputation from the Ashburton district which waited upon the Minister of Railways. Mon. W. A. Veil eh, at Wellington.
The deputation said that many farmers would suffer through the closing of the four miles of railway from Mount Somers to Springbuni. The country served required heavy lop-dressing, and the farmers relied on the railways for the carriage of fertilisers. Mr. VoiteJi agreed that top-dres-sing was a great factor in increasing the production of a farm, but said that the loss on the line was large. He knew the closing of the line was a serious thing for farmers, but the financial position of the railways was also a serious thing for the Government.
