THE FLOOD

The Manawnln rose steadily all day yesterday giving farmers in the Montoa and Whirokino districts ample warning of a threatened inundation. Stock was removed to higher ground in anticipation. Late yesterday afternoon the river had two foot to rise before reaching the level of Hie November flood in 1929. Fears were entertained for the safety of the new banks erected by the Manawntn-Oroua River Board to protect the- “cuts” npide in the vicinity of the Mouton school and the work of sand-bagging these new hanks was commenced.

•Settlers report that it is many years since they have seen the river running so fast. This is possibly attributed lo the fact that the tides are now on the wane, the spring tides having reached their maximum on Saturday night. A great deal of timber is coming down.

Late yesterday afternoon the water commenced to llmv into the Mouton and Whirokino districts, through a gap in the flood banks at Mr. Spring’s farm, Whirokino, where the flood bank was cut last (mod to let the water off this area. Bv night the water commenced trickling ov.er the Foxton-Levin highway at Whirokino. At midnight tin' road was impassable to traffic with a considerable depth of water over it in places.

The-Foxton-Shnnnon road is siill clear and there is no water over the road between Foxton and Palmerston North.

The river is reported to he fal ling at pilzhorbert Bridge.
