MR. FORBES HONOURED.
A WARNING TO CANADA. In a gathering representative of all shades of political opinion attended by about 360 people the Prime Minister (Hon. G. W. Forbes) was honoured at Christchurch by Canterbury residents on Saturday evening to mark the attainment for the. first time of a man born in this province to the highest office iik the Dominion. The chairman, Sir Heaton Rhodes, and Dr. John Guthrie, who proposed the toast of the guest of honour, both referred to Air. Forbes’ uprightness of character. Mr. Forbes, responding, said lie lmd never been at n meeting wliers. lie had s<> many friends. He defended tins Government’s taxation proposals, but deplored Canada's
action in increasing the tariff ou New Zealand butler. “1 hope we shall be able in obtain more favourable terms,” be said. “It is a ipery short-sighted policy ou the part of Canada as the 'balance of trade is all in tier favour. We do not think we have been fairly treated.”
