LORRY DRIVER KILLED.

IN ICOLLLSTON WITH TRAIN. A very bad level crossing accident occurred at Waikanae on Monday when a lorry, driven by a Wfaikanae resident, was badly smashed as the result of being hit by a. train at Fraser’s crossing, the driver being so seriously injured that he succumbed shortly after admission to hospital.

The scene of the accident was between Te Horo and Waikanae at a crossing known as Fraser’s Crossing, near Mr. Fraser's residence. The driver of the lorry, James Stewart, a half-caste Maori, in turning to cross the line failed to notice the approaching train, the New Plymouth express, anil his lorry was hit midway and practically smashed to matchwood. The train pulled up and Stewart was found in the wreckage in a very had condition, with severe injuries to the head, arms arid" legs.

Dr. McLean, of the Public Health Department, who was a passenger on the train, attended the injured man and ordered his removal to the Otaki hospital, where the victim died without regaining consciousness.
