FOXTON’S UNEMPLOYED.
RELIEF WORK COMMENCED. The executive 'committee set up to operate on the funds raised by public subscription and other means to assist in giving relief to Poston's unemployed met for the first time in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening when there were present: Messrs M. E. Perreau (Mayor), John Ross, P. Robinson and S. E. Cowley (representing the Borough Council) and Messrs T. McGee, .J. Langdon and D. Ball (representing the unemployed). Mr. A. G. Huntley (road foreman) and Mr. W. Neville (waterworks foreman, and the Town Clerk (Mr. Win. Trueman) were also in attendance. The Mayor was voted to the chair and the meeting unanimously elected the Town Clerk (Mr. Win. Trueman) secretary and treasurer., I rcqsurer.
It was decided that all works undertaken be supervised by Messrs A. G. Huntley, and AY. Neville.
The list of registered unemployed was examined and the men graded into three lists, the most deserving cases, men with wives and families, being given first preference while the length of time out of work was also taken in consideration. It was decided that Ihe men in grade be given three half days’ work, those in grade 2, two half days and those in grade 3, one half day as funds pennit.
Unfortunately it was found necessary in some cases to defer work altogether but each case was dealt with strictly on its merits.
Air. Ball handed in a cheque for £7 subscribed by Whittaker Street residents for the formation and construction of a footpath in lhat locality, Imt as the road foreman reported that il was impossible to carry mil tar sealing work at present it was decided to accept half the amount in the meantime and to go ahead with the formation; of the path. A gang of men started operations under the supervision of the road foreman in this connection the following morning. 'l"he Town Clerk reported that lie had endeavoured to get in touch with the Public Works Engineer with regard to the Government subsidy but had been unsuccessful. He had therefore forwarded the following' wire, to the Minister for Public Works:—
“Unemployed position here getting desperate. Last night large deputation waited on Council who decided appropriate £IOO towards relief fund being raised bv voluntary subscription. Will you advise steps necessary to obtain Government subsidy.” So far no reply has been received to the wire.
