EDUCATION REPORT.
POST PRIMARY COURSES. CONSOLIDATION OF COUNTRY SCHOOLS. in the House on Tuesday Mr. W. .A. Bodkin on behalf of the Education Committee presented Part 1. of its report. ‘Replying to AH. Coales, Air. Iforbes said if it would meet tlu* convenience of the House, the report would probably be submitted for discussion before the end of the week.
OUTLINE OK EEC OA L MEN DA - TIONiS. The Education report comprised a sixty-page Parliamentary paper, embodying the recommendations of Hie select committee set up last mission with a direction to report comprehensively on New Zealand's system of education. If adopted by the Government, the recommendations will involve a complete recasting of the administrative side of the primary, technical and secondary education, the raising of the compulsory school age by one year to 15 years and other important reforms. The committee’s recommendations may be briefly summarised as follows:—
(J) The termination of primary education at 11 plus years of age. (2) Compulsory post-primary education to 15 years. (.1) Exploratory courses (11 plus to 15 years) to determine the aptitudes for further full lime education for continuers or for employment (for leavers) accompanied, wherever (possible, by continued evening education. (4) Consolidation of schools 'and classes. (5) Scholarship funds to be used for the maintenance of bursaries to assist deserving pupils to continue their post-primary education to higher stages. The present system of allocating national scholarships to be abandoned. (ti) Prominence will be given to agrieullure in all school curricula. (7) Unification of administrative organisation and control within each anil of educational authority. Reduction of the principal local controlling authorities from 5-1 to IS.
(S) Readjustment of the functions or central and local educational authorities. (!') A national teaching service with a new salary scale and one teacher’s register for the whole Service*.
