PAY-ROLL STOLEN

£7OO TAKEN FROM 'CITY TREASURY. On Friday last the Wellington City Treasury in the Town Hall was robbed of baulk notes totalling over £7OO. This sum was part of the payroll which had been made up during the forenoon. It seems that the money was made up in parcels ready to he taken round to various johs in the ipay ear. It was placed in a special till-box, ready for the afternoon’s pay-out, hut during the luncheon hour entrance to the office was obtained and tlie box was rifled of ils hank notes, mostly in lives and singles. The thief did not trouble to lift Ihe silver.

The thief could have had very little lime to effect Ids purpose, as lie had to force a locked door, remove the money and make his 'escape. It is believed Ilia I lie is one well acquainted with the office .premises and its routine, ami knew all about Ihe pay money and where it was placed in the office before dist rihution.

This is not by any means the first occasion on which moneys have been Stolen I'tjo m the City Treasury. Alter the lasi case a system was adopted which, il was thought would make such a crime veil-nigh impossible.
