FOOTBALL.

BRITAIN DEFEAT'S MAORIS,

BY .MARGIN OF SIX POINTS.

The Maori All Black team were defeated at Wjellington yesterday by the British team after one of the hardest matches the visitors have played during 'the tour. The game ended Britain 19 —Maoris 13. Throughout, the game was played at a rattling pace; there was always something doing, an almost entire absence of the prolonged tight scrummaging- that so often makes football uninteresting, and there was not a great deal of difference [between the opposing forwards. E. Bell played a particularly line game at wing-forward in the Maori team and was largely responsible for the effective smothering of the British inside backs, R. iS. Bpong and H. M. Bowcott, who, however, both (proved versatile in meeting the occasion. J. Morley, the speedy winger who scored the sensational try at Dunedin, notched another two tries, and A. L. Novis, on the other wing, was also responsible for two, .J. Rum, on the Maori whig, also played a spectacular game, and H. Harrison, the Maori half-back, came out with colours ffyhigvin his contest with Spong. The two full-backs, G. Nepia and J. A. Bassett) gave splendid exhibitions.

The Maoris scores were made up of a penalty goal kicked by Nepia, converted try scored by Pelham and converted by Nepia, and a try by Rum also converted by Nepia. The attendance was about 27,000 and Ihe weather was ideal.,
