THREE YEARS FOR BIGAMY.
Dunedin, Last Night. “This is a bad case,” said his Honour, Mr. Justice Kennedy, in the Supreme Court this afternoon in 'sentencing Edward John lienery to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour for bigamy. It was impossible to disguise the tact, said bis Honour, that prisoner laid shown a callous indifference to liis wife and to his numerous family. Depositions made it, clear that he left his'wife deserted and umiiointaincd in Invercargill and came to Dunedin where he went through a form of marriage with another woman and set up a separate establishment. Prisoner had failed to live honestly though lie had been treated leniently for an offence involving dishonesty and !hough he had served a sentence of three years’ hard labour for the crime of carnal knowledge.
» Air. C. J. L. While, who appeared for prisoner, said that Henery was married in the first place in England while on war service and brought his wife to New Zealand, 1 here being six surviving children of the marriage.
