lIOROWGENUA DISTRICT COUNCIL. The Horowlicnua District Council met at Levin on Tuesday. PROTEST HELD OVER. A protest by the Tokomavu Club against the result of their match with Fusion was held over till next meeting, pending a statement from the referee. The grounds of the protest were that the proper time Imd not been played. FINANCES LOW. The secretary outlined the financial position. The Council had a bank balance of £7O. Tt was hardly likely that another £3O would be received in revenue. Assuming that it was they would have £IOO in hand. The expenses in sight, which he enumerated, totalled £l4O, and did not include the cost of visiting Ihe Bush Union probably £2O. The treasurer (Mr. Rammer) said the total gates so far amounted to £ll7, and would hardly reach £l5O for the season, whereas last season the gates totalled £303.
ENCOURAGING JUNIORS. The secretary said the intermediate grade had played two rounds, and the Council was paying 15/per team for travelling expenses. This had cost £3. It was for the Council to say whether two more rounds should he played. The Council considered it was right to foster the junior players amt it was decided to play two further rounds on the same conditions us those already played. Mr. Procter complained that for two Saturdays no referees had been appointed for the intermediate matches at Shannon. - It was decided to ask the Referees’ Association whv no referees were appointed for the fourthgrade mutches, as the. Council considered it was very important that, young players should he encouraged. COUNTY '.("BUB’S POSITION. The secretary reported that the County Club had become financial, but they had defaulted three times and according to the rules had forfeited their right to play in the competition. Mr. Robinson said lie would like In see County get a. game, even it the Council was straying a little from the rules hv permitting it. Mr. McCarthy said it showed a ~od spirit if a dill) after for-L-iling paid its fees. After discussion it was decided, ~i, Mr. Robinson's motion, that ( uiiniy he advised that they were mil of the competition, but could in range friendly matches against !he teams they were drawn against. The opinion was held that, if County were allowed to continue in the competition, in the event of them winning a. match, their opponents would have a right to protest.
AUSTIN BANNER COMPETITION.
Levin met Foxton in the above competition at Easton Park this morning. The standard of play was very high and showed a great improvement on last Saturday’s play. Foxton won the toss and played with the wind. The first score came very early from a forward rush when G. Gilmour dived over. The kick went wide. Foxton 3—Levin nil. Using the wind and kicking high the local Hoys soon increased their tally, W. Lee adding another try, which K. Coley converted —Foxton B—Levin8 —Levin nil. The rest of the first spell was very evenly contested, Levin keeping the ball tight. Foxton opened the second spell with a forward rush which carried play well into Levin territory. A Levin player getting offside, Coley kicked a good goal, making the score 11—nil in favour of Foxton. The rest of the spell was one long atlaijk by the visitors who scored two tries. Nearing the end Foxlon had a. new lease of life and kept play well down in Levin territory. The game ended shortly afterwards leaving Foxton winners hv 11—15.
Mr. Henry Taylor gave a mas terlv exhibition with the whistle.
At the conclusion of the games the visiting teams and supporters were entertained to morning tea. The Foxton team was as follows : • j
Full-back, W. AEciPhai]; threequarters, A. Baird, Iv. Coley, TV Roiri; five-eighths, S. Bills, J. Alexander; half, D. Williams; wingforward, N. Fee; hookers, T. Wallhat lon, T. Prentice; lock, G. Giltiiour; supports, W. Bee, TT. Alexander; hack row, V. Rand, D. New- ! t'li.
RAGKET'BALL.
This morning the Levin A and B basketball teams journeyed to I'Yi.vlon to play the school A and B teams. Levin won the A game (i—3, while the B teams drew, 2 all. The A team gave a poorer exhibition to-day than last Saturday, and fully deserved to lose. Passes were wild and fumbled badly, especially in tiie defence and centre. The goals played a sound game but were not iptitc strong enough for 'Levin’s good defence—the best part of the visiting team. Levin’s goals, though they played a ragged game, handled the ball much better than did the A teams. The visiting team's goals, in particiUar, played a good game and I’oxton’s centres deserve commendation fo_r their game, inexperienced players as they are. Foxton in this game were really unlucky not to win especially as a few minutes before time they scored a winning goat which was not allowed on aei omit of an infringement. After the games had concluded,
Mr. Wallkly, of Levin, very kindly offered to donate a trophy to be competed for by surrounding schools. This will be greatly appreciated as it should do much to promote interest in basketball in the district and better play should result. Hearty cheers wei*e given for Mr. Wjalkly. The following were the local teams: —
