THE PORT AND SHIPPING.
COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S SUGGESTION. “The position still remains that iu spite of the little loss, the district gains immensely. If we had one more.scow running' to the port we could make the port pay,’ said Cr. W. E. Barber (chairman) at Tuesday’s meeting of the Alanawatu County Council when reporting on the Eoxton Harbour Board ami the recent rate levied on contributing local bodies. He said that the facts had already been reviewed in the press and the new situation created, as a result of the recent publicity, was that before any future levies were contemplated, contributing' bodies would be called together to discuss the position. This year the rate would have to he paid. The unfortunate position which the Harbour Board had got into was the outcome of the wreck of the Kennedy and port charges had continued to pile up while the port was at a standstill.
Ur. Barber fell that another scow would make the port a payable proposition and he was inclined to the opinion that I In 1 port was of value lo the district and may yet come into its own again. There was no doubt that the port was the natural outlet for an extensive district. He would he very sorry to say, at the moment, “close it up.” The County Cleric (Mr. A. K. Drew): In any ease if they close the port up, the local bodies would still have to find £IOOO annually.
The chairman: No, no, it won't lie as bad as that because the board collects a substantial amount annually in beach rents.
