West Goast-Bnller, w on 3-1 —11. BRITAIN DEFEAT WEST COAST. EAST SCORING AT F,NI). Greymoutb, June 11.
An interesting and for the greater part an even game between Britain and the West-Ooast-'Bullor combined team was witnessed on a damp field in fine weather to-day Ly live thousand people. The visitors won by 3-1 points to 11, compiling two-thirds of their points in llie final ipiarler. till when the .-.cores were equal. The local men played w T cll up till then, the forwards being superior in the loose to tlu* Britons, who, however, had most of the ball, their backs very frequently advancing in a line which was broken only by good ta.elkling. ’I fie British pack’s objective was to give Spang- the ball, and he pivoted the attacks which made full use of the opportunities only in the final stages, as the movements previously broke down, often through faulty handling by the outside men. The \isitiitg backs changed places se\cral limes, lad the tide was only definitely turned when Jones-Da-vies wenl up from full-back to the wing and gained three tries in quick succession when the local men were tiring. The home backs, without getting many attacking chances, essayed these only individually, failing mostly by lack of cohesion. The visitors were plainly anxious when the scores were 11-all. Well into the second spell, out of over a dozen penalty kicks the West Coasters were allowed but three, one being successful. Tlie most creditable fries were probably the two which Morley gained by dashes
in the first spell, while Wilkinson gained two later by keeping well up with the backs, he being the outstanding British forward. The teams were as follows: —
Britain. — Full-bae'k, Jones-Bn-vics; three-quarters, Alorley, Murray, Novis, and Knowles; stand-off half, Spong; scrum-half, Poole; forwards, I few, Parker, 0 Neill, Hodgson, Dunne, Ivor Jones, W il-I'in.-mn, and Prentice (captain). West ( oast-Buller. —Full-hack, A. Hraham (Balter); three-quar-ters, M. Jamieson I West Coast), SFilbert (Buller), Alarlyn (West 1 oast); live-eighths, A. Fong (West Coast), Al. Houston (West Coast); ball, AL Davidson (West Coast);
