BOOKMAKER FINED £250.
THIRD CONVICTION. Wellington, June 5. Arrested by detectives at 2.30 this afternoon Thomas Phillips, aged 58, was fined £250 when he appeared an hour later before Mr. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Police Court on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker. lie pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said that accused bad been betting in Wellington since 1920. When he first, came under the notice of the police in 1922 he was fined £IOO for keeping a common gaming house and in 1924 lie was again fined £IOO on a similar charge. Phillips, the Detective-Sergeant added, was a married man with a family. He had taken seventy-one bets that, day, the hugest one being
for £5. He bad £64 13/- in his possession when arrested. Accused was belting in a very substantial way and was regarded as one of the •‘medium” type of bookmaker. Accused had nothing to say in reply to the charge. The Magistrate said the maximum penalty was £SOO or two years’ imprisonment. Accused was allowed one month in which to pay the fine in default six weeks’ imprisonment.
