THREE-ROOMED COTTAGE DESTROYED.
WOMAN AND CHILD HAVE NARROW ESCAPE. Awakened bv the coughing of her infant child, Airs. R. W. Davey, of Shannon Road, Eoxton, just had time to gather up the baby and seize a few elolltes in her smokefilled residence last, evening and escape from the building as it burst into (lames. The tire siren sounded for Llie outbreak about 9 o'clock, but the conflagration being outside the borough the brigade were nol able lo render any assistance, and the dwelling, a t hree-roomed cottage “Wned by llie Wliitnmmi Flaxmilhng Co., was totally destroyed. The house was filled with smoke and as die groped her wav lo the baby she heard the crash of ornaments falling from the mantelpiece in the dining room. The origin uf the lire is a mystery but there had been a lire in the range during the evening and it is thought that a spark from the chimney set lire (u some dry rubbish in the spouting.
The building is eovered by insurance but the amount is not yet Available. Mr. Davey hud a cover of .£350 uit bis furniture and effects in the Standard Office.
