PORT OF FOXTON.

KATRAXUA COUNTY’S PROTEST . In forwarding a cheque for the current year’s levy to the Foxtou Harbour Board, at its meeting in Palmerston N. yesterday, (be Kailanga Comity Council advised that payment was made under protest, and the opinion was advanced that the ratepayers in the county derived no benefit, from Hie port- of Foxton. ATr Al. E. Perreau said Hint: the county was evidently acting under a misapprehension. It was incorrect to say that Kairange received no benefit. ICairnnga drew a large proportion of its goods from Palmerston N., and therefore derived a substantia! indirect benefit.

The Chairman, Air. J. Linklnler ALP., in agreeing with rhese views, 1 ntinted diil i hut 75 per cent, of the trade of the port came through Palmerston North merchants. The Secretary: Ninety per c-ent. Air Link later: The bulk of the port’s trade tames to Palmerston North, and cheaper rates are the result. I object to the tone of the letter, and fail to see why the levy of £11.7 should be paid under protest.

Mr .1. A. Nash. ALT’.: That is quite a common proceeding. It gets over the wo Cry of paying when one adds “under protest." (Laughter). Air Linklater: The Board is carrying on as orniioinieallr as possible. lam otie of -the largest ratepayers in Kairauga County, and 1 am quite satisfied that, considerable benefits are being derived. Mr R, Edwards: I am surprised that such a protest should be made. Apart from other considerations, it is now too late, as everything has been arranged. A protest without a reason means nothing at all, and we should not waste time discussing it. ALr Nash said that the benefits derived by ratepayers of Kairanga should be stressed. The letter was “received.”
