TAR SEALING OF NORTH ENTRANCE TO TOWN.

At last night’s Borough 'Council meeting a reply was received (o the Council's communication to the Highways Board in reference to the tar sealing of the north entrance to the town, a strip of roadway between the etui of Russell Sr., and Hie commeiieemeiif of the Iliumfangi highway, which has always been in a more or less badly corrugated -date.

The District Engineer advised that it would he very desirable to have this 35 chains of roadway paved at the same time as the work was being undertaken on the Himalangi road. The Engineer pointed out that the work being undertaken hy the Muawatu County Council was on a £3 for £1 basis and he suggested that the same subsidy apply to the extra 35 chains. Mr Boiiayne mentioned, however, that the matter was one between the Council and the Alanawatu County Council and if the Council and the Comity were to share half the cost each, the work would not amount to much more than about £IBO each. The K lerk said that he had dismissed the matter with Mr Barber. The road could not he sealed in its present condition and the next thing was to obtain an estimate for the actual cost. The Alanawatu County Council Engineer had roughly worked the cost our at considerably more than that mentioned hy the District Engineer.

The Alayor said that lie was sorry that Cr. Barron had brought the mat ter up at last meeting as the Council had no money ro spend on the work and if was no use raising a loan for the improvement of the road. The Highways Board was evidently under the impression that the foundation work was done. AH' Barker was quite prepared to go on wiili the work as far as the Alanav.atu County Council was concerned hut where was the Borough going to raise its share of the cost? 'Cr. Barron expressed surprise that the work would cost so much.

The Mayor explained that The idea was to join the Himatangi highway up with the borough higiiway in Russell St. Cr Barron said that there had evidently been some misunderstanding. tie never mentioned the Russell St. road. He had asked that the Himatangi highway he connected up with the Victoria St. tar-sealed mad and was opposed to sealing any more of Russell St. It was decided to obtain an estimate for sealing the road to the junction of Victoria St.
