CAPTAIN COOKER” SHOT IN TARARUA RANGES.

LOCAL RESIDENTS HAVE EXCfTINd TIME. Messrs 11. Hamer and W. Thompson, of Poxton, and Mr H. W. Robinsoiq of Shannon, had an exciting experience in the Tararua Ranges daring the week end. They left on a pig' hunting expedition on Saturday evening and the next day were not long on the trail before. Ihe three dogs bailed up a largo boar in some fern. It; was impossible to despat eh the animal with a ri.lle owing to the presence oL' the dogs, lit the tussle which ensued between the dogs and the hoar, one dog sustained a broken leg but even this did not deter him in his savage attack on the pig. Subsequently a slioL was put into the hoar but it dirt not appear to have the slightest effect and before lie was finally despatched, all three dogs were ripped, the one with the broken leg, seriously. The animal which proved to be a veritable “Captain Cooker,” was (jft. 4in. long, from tip to tip, and was sft. around the girth while its hide showed the scars of many battles. It was computed to weigh 3701b5. After attending to the badly injured dog and conveying him to a comfortable place pending the return trip home, the party again set out and it was not long before the dogs had bailed up another boar, this time a younger animal. He was despatched without much trouble but the party was not successful in getting on to the sows or younger pigs as the boars had held the dogs to give them time to make for a place of safety. The trophies of the chase are at present on view in Mr H. Hamer’s shop.
