WHITE PINE AS GOOD AS TOTARA.
WHEN TREATED WITH CREASOTE.
When the matter of sheathing work was being discussed at the ■ annual meeting of the Aloutoa Drainage Board on Thursday evening, the chairman said that it was not generally known that white pine specially treated lasted in the ground equally as well as totara. lie had recently been shown some white pine sleepers which had been placed in the ground in 1909 after being treated with 'creasote. When they had been taken up a short time ago they were found to be as sound as the day they had been laid. Another member mentioned that a number of years ago a factory had undertaken the treatment of white pine with creasote at Woodvilie and a large quantity of timber was turned out but when the war broke out it; became impossible to procure the creasote and the business was dropped.
