FOXTON HARBOUR DISTRICT.
DIFFERENTIAL KATE STRUCK. The Buxton Harbour Board decided yesterday to levy the following annual recurring differential special rate on the capital value of ..I! rateable property within the following areas, comprising the Fox ton harbour district: Eoxton Borough, 7-8 d in the £1; PalmerMo n North Borough, 1-lOcl; Feeding Borough, l-20d; Levin Borough, !-12d; Manawatu County J,d; Kairauga County, l-24d. It was anticipated that the rates would yield £IOOO. In moving the adoption of the resolution Mr. M. E. Perreau cxImessed regret at the necessity of such a resolution. However, an examination of the finances, and the necessary expenditure for the coming year made it expedient to have more, money. Mr. J. A. Nash regretted that it was necessary to resort to this course. Mr. J. Linklater: Wo all do. MV. Nash said that the secretary when sending out the circulars to the local bodies concerned, should state the reasons for the rate and Mint out thu financial position of lhe board. Mr. Kellow: There can be only one reason, and that is the port is being rim at a loss.. For the next Mx months our expenditure will be ibe same, but the revenue will be oiilv half.
Mr. Perreau: The extra £IOOO will pay interest and sinMng fund. The amount of. cargo now coming through the port is saving the people a lot of money, and considerable indirect benefits are being derived. The motion was carried.
