The driver of a New Plymouth baker’s van got a nasty shock the other day, but it was a wonder he got off so easily. A heavy electric cable in St. Aubyn Street broke and fell across the passing van. The loose end of the cable curled round the van and pulled it up short. Sparks flew all round, but the driver must have been insulated from the current, and escaped any injury. A monoplane constructed al Whukatane was given a flying test on Oliope Reach on Sunday by the builder, Mr. John Allison. The ’plane rose from the beach and flew about, a mile Usll. up in the air, but as the motor did not appear to be l auctioning perfectly the aviator deemed it wise to effect a lauding and not make any more tests that day. A further flying test will he made this week.

Although the vessel is cracked amidships, the steel hull still holds together after nearly iiily-two years of battering by tides and storms. The Hyderabad was dri- \ mi ashore on June 25th, 187 b.
