TARANAKI COAL.
MINE OPENED ON SATURDAY

A new industry of importance to Taranaki was launched on Saturday, when the Egmont (h)llieries (oal mine at Tangarakau was officially opened by the lion. W. A. Yeiteh, .Minister of Mines.
A special excursion train con>,eyed a large number of people irom all parts of Taranaki and Wanganui to Tangarakau Flat, a new station on t lie SI rat ford-Main Trunk railway, four miles past Tahora, the present official rail bead aml IS miles from St rat ford.
The tramline, mining operations end the mine were inspected ami on return to the Flat, a demonstration was given of the working of I lie modern screening and grading plant, by means of which coal straight from the mine face is cleaned, graded and deposited into inilway trucks without double handling. A strong plea for support of the Dominion's coal industry and for its protection against cheaper ini ports from other countries was made by the Minister, lie referred particularly to the great efforts heiiijr minto in Auslralin at peasant- to ieduce the cost of con! production. II that movement succeeded and i oal were imported to New Zealand it would mean that hundreds of New Zealanders engaged in the mining industry would he thrown out of employment. "1 am going to see that that does not occur,” aid the 'Minister.
