MAIN HIGHWAYS CONSTRUCTION.

COOL) PROGRESS IN IID ROW'D EX U A AND MANAWATU COUNTIES,

llolh the Horowhemia and Maltawatu 'County Councils came in for a special word of praise sit Thursday night’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce iu connection with Ihe main highways. It was slated that the Horowhemia County Council was proceeding with Ihe Inst lap of the WcllingtonAuekland main highway 111 rough their County—from Poroiita whao to the Whirokino bridge—a distance of between live ami six miles. When this portion is completed the whole length of the main highway through the County will be completed. This county undertook its highways construction policy whsit time others waited for more fsi\curable terms. The praise accorded them hy the Chamber is well merited and the hope was expressed that I lie Highways Hoard had not overlooked the ilorowhenna County in grants which would have a rest respective bearing'. The Manawalu County also came in for its share of the Chamber's appreciation. The lirst- portion of the Wellingion-Aiiekland main highway—a distance of about six miles—from the borough boundary to Sorenson’s corner will he completed in about three months’ time. This will leave two uncompleted sections, viz., from the Wliirokino bridge to the borough houndary—about, three miles —and from Sorenson's corner to Sandon—about 12 miles. Ni\ preparatory worklias been commenced on these sections of the national highway. Owing to the flooding conditions of the Wliirokino section, and the possibility of the Rivers Hoard scheme being adopted, delay will necessarily be occasioned before this section is linally adopted. The HiimiI a ngi-Sa ndoii section, however, presents no serious Constructive whs! aelcs—except tin a lice —and 1 rem u national point of view is of ' ‘ lll af importance to t hat of the Sniidon-Palmerston section which, hy (lie wav, is now nearing .completion.

On the Ilimaiangi-R-angiotu section of highway all the preparatory work is complete and possibly the scaling ol this section will he undci'Lakcn before a start is made oil Cm Ilimalangi-Handon Wellingt-on-A. iicklaml main highway.

The Alanawatu County Council haw liimlised all the engineering plans for the main highways through the County and will continue to prosecute the work with the least possible delay. It is that within the next live years the whole of the highways, both main ami subsidiary, will lie completed through the Countv.
