RUGBY FOOTBALL,

lIOROWjUENUA DISTRICT

COUNCIL.

The management committee of the Hoi’owhenua Rugby District Council met in Levin last Thursday night. Messrs L. McCarthy and F. Robinson represented the local Club at the meeting. (Notification of his acceptance of the position of junior selector for the northern division was received from Air. T. Watson. The Tokomaru Club wrote stating that Air. A. Grady bad been elected as their delegate.

The Onslow Clnb wrote asking if two teams —a junior and a third grade —from Levin could play two from that club at Kliandallah on Easter Saturday. It was hoped by the writer that the event could be made an annual one, to be played at each of the two places alternately.—'The matter was referred to the delegates. USE OF GROUND. Correspondence was received in reply to the Committee’s inquiries for reduced ground rentals for the coming season. The Town Clerk of Foxton wrote that his Council had fixed the rent of Easton Park at £7 10/-, instead of £lO as charged last year. The Otaki Borough Council intimated that the rent would be £8 for the season, instead of being on a (percentage basis. From the Paraparaumu Domain Board information was received that their ground would he available on the same terms as last season. „ .. The Levin Borough Council, in reply to the committee’s suggestion that the rent, of the Park Domain should be 10 per cent, of the gate takings, offered the ground on the basis of 15 per cent, of. the takings at the gate and stand, stating that, on the basis of last year’s takings, this would show a reduction of £7 8/-. .. The Shannon Borough Council wrote that their Domain would be granted on Ihe same terms as last year —namely, £lO. The secretary reported that he had replied to the Shannon Council stating that the rent mentioned was impossible, because the club games last year only brought in £lB, while the expenses connected witli them were £l6 10/-. He asked them whether they could arrive at a percentage basis, or, in the alternative, what the rent would be if the Rugby •Council made no charge at the Irate. An answer was received stating' that the Borough Council had resolved to adhere to the rental of £lO, but that free use of the ground would be granted if no charge was made at the gate or collection taken up. Mr. A. Wood, in reply to an inquiry regarding his paddock, wrote that the footballers were welcome to it again this season, if all care was taken of fences, etc. The secretary said he was inclined to accept the Foxton, Levin and Otaki offers. Tlie chairman stated that he had been informed by the Town Clerk of Otaki that it had been decided to spend about £l3 on the ground, and ior that reason his Council could not make any further concession. Referring to the (Shannon matter, Air. Richards “aid that it was essential to make a charge at the gates, as otherwise they would be establishing a wrong precedent for other towns. He agreed that £lO was too much, but he thought that they could come to some arrangement with the Borough Council on U percentage basis and perhaps obtain a reduction. Air. Robinson, speaking of the position at Foxton, said that after he had explained the circumstances to the Council, that body bad decided’ to giant the ground at £7 10/- and also to allow the footballers the.use of the swimming bath and dressing sheds. The offers of the Levin, Foxton and Otaki Councils were accepted. Air. Robinson moved that a deputation, consisting of Messrs Richards, Mitchell and Robinson, wait on the (Shannon Borough Council in regard to the. lease of the Domain for the coming season. MV. \\]atts seconded the motion, and it was carried. ADVENT OF THE (SEASON.
