WHITEBAIT RESEARCH.
Yesterday Captain Hayes made ;■ farther investigation of the Alnnawntu River with a view, if possible, to locating additional spawning grounds. In this he was assisted by a number of local fishermen and others interested in the work he is earrying out. Further beds were discovered at various parts, measured off and noted for future reference.
The ir.op) ain was actually able, in one pari, to secure a snap of some cattle crossing one spawning ground to the serious detriment of the eggs deposited there. Bast night Captain Hayes spent considerable time in carefully packing- away his samples for their transfer to Wellington, and left this afternoon for the city. ITe expects, however, to he back again within a week or so to watch developments on the spawning hods at the conclusion of the hatching period.
Prior to his departure the Caplain in conversation with our representative expressed his appreciation of flic l services so willingly offered him by a number of local i esideuts. Their assistance, he ■aid, had been a great help to him and enabled him to get about quickly and accomplish his work in a most expeditions manner.
