GRACEFUL TRIBUTE.

BYRD SPEAKS CXB SCOTT. Oamaru, March 19. In the public gardens this afternoon, Reai'-Admiral Byrd, in the course of his address before presenting the prizes for the Scott Memorial essays, paid a graceful tribute to the memory of the intrepid British explorer. Admiral Byrd said: "There is one thing that the members of tills expedition hold in common, with the people of New Zealand: that is a deep respect for the memory of Captain-Scott and his men. As for myself, 1 think Scott is the hero of heroes. It is in the held of the spirit that he made his greatest contribution to the world. Things of the spirit are much more important than material things. In failure he gained immortal fame, and in dying left to you a heritage success could not have given. When In lost the super-human struggle he calmly wrote the word which will make his memory honoured for all time. So we salute the name of this great-hearted gentleman, Robert Balcon Scott.”
