LEVIN-FOXTON HIGHWAY.
ONLY FIVE MILES TO BE COMPLETED. Remarking that the bitumen gangs had about finished the work that they bad in hand, IGr. Bryant asked, at the Ilorowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday, if there were likely to he any further operations commenced this financial year. The-chairman (Mr. G. A. Monk) replied in the negative, and said he would make a statement in committee. When the committee deliberations were over, the Chairman informed the Press that at present there was no further work to go on with. The monetary authority to March-31st had expired, but the Council hoped to obtain some fresh authorities during the ensuing week, and thus keep the men employed. The only sections of Highways in the County on which no work has been commenced arc: Five and a-half miles on the Foxton Road, between the three miles of bitumen .about completed and the Whirokino Bridge; and four .miles on the Palmerston via Shannon route, between Makerua and the Tokoinaru River. On the latter section the survey of a deviation will take place this mouth, with a view to having the work done this winter if the nccessifry grant is received. The Highway between Levin and the southern boundary of the County has been finished except for the construction of the Manakau Bridge, tenders for which have been called.
