DRINKING BY WOMEN.

COMPLAINTS IN AUCKLAND,

Auckland, March 6. The prevalence of drinking by women in hotels was condemned in a letter received by the City Licensing Committee from the Auckland council of the New Zealand Alliance. It 'was suggested that the committee should take steps to see that licensees ceased supplying wo - men with drink. Inspector Hollis said that "-neither the police nor the committee could take any- steps until legislation was passed to allow them to interfere. There was nothing at present to prevent a licensee selling liquor to women. The police had tried to. discourage the practice, fout they had no arbitrary power. The chairman, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: “You had better let us have, before the annual meeting of the committee, the names of those*who tm-ourage the trade.”
