DRINKING BY WOMEN
PREVALENCE IN AUCKLAND
Auckland, March 5. The prevalence of drinking by women in hotels Avas condemned in a letter received by the City Licensing Committee from the Auckland council of the Ncav Zealand Alliance. It Avas suggested that the committee should take steps to see that licensees ceased supplying women with drink. Inspector Hollis said that both the police and the committee could not take any steps until legislation was passed to allow them to interfere. There was nothing at present to prevent a licensee -selling liquor to women. The police had tried to discourage the practice, but they had no arbitrary poAver. The chairman, Mr J. K. Hunt, S.M.: You had bettor let us have, before the annual meeting of the committee the .names of those who encourage the trade.
