FISHING BOAT LOST IN GALE.
NO SIGN OF CREW. Invercargill, March 5. Advice Avas received by a sergeant of police at the Bluff to-day of the loss of the fishing boat Mara roa, owned by the Bluff Fish and lOyster Co., Avhile engaged in fishing off Smoky Point at 8 o’clock , this morning. It is feared that the lavo men on hoard, Thomas Clark and John West, have been droAvned. It is too rough in the straits for any small vessel to make a search. The Mararoa was considered to he a very seaworthy craft. She was ketch-rigged, and had an auxiliary engine. It is reported from Stewart Island that three fishing boats Avere running for shelter at the time, and one of them noticed that the Mararoa had disappeared. The boat immediately turned and cruised round the spot for some time fruitlessly, and finally had to leave the dangerous 7>laee.
Other boats Avill return to the search as soon as the gale moderates.
